Raffi Says He Didn’t Have a Happy Childhood, and Now He Calls for a Culture of Respect for All Kids Fifty years after his first album, children’s musician Raffi says his own childhood shaped his mission. Raffi, 78, told PEOPLE, “I didn’t have what I would call a happy childhood.” He said it was “a great bewilderment in many ways.” He was born in Cairo to parents who fled Turkey during the Armnian Gencide. The family later moved to Canada in 1958. “The grace in it was that I knew I was loved,” he said. But he asks himself, “If I was loved, why wasn’t I feeling seen and respected?” He first performed for kids in 1974 at a nursery school in Toronto. His first album, Singable Songs for the Very Young, went gold within 18 months. It included “Down by the Bay.” He later wrote “Baby Beluga.” In 1997, he created a philosophy he calls child honouring. He founded the Raffi Foundation for Child Honouring. “For as long as I can remember in this career, I’ve called for a culture of respect,” he said. He said children need to feel “seen respected” in their early years. He lovingly calls his adult fans “Beluga Grads.” His new album, Love Is Everywhere, came out Oct. 23. The first album will be re-released in November. “It means the world to me that the music endures,” he said.
