They Live (1988) 🕶️👽 Is there a more perfectly 80s combination than Roddy Piper, aliens, sunglasses and one of the greatest one-liners in movie history? 😂 John Carpenter’s They Live was weird, funny, violent and actually a whole lot smarter than it first appeared. Roddy Piper as Nada is just an ordinary drifter trying to find work when he discovers a pair of sunglasses that reveal what’s REALLY happening around him. Put them on and suddenly the world changes. Billboards say OBEY. Advertisements tell you to CONSUME. Money delivers its own hidden message. And some of the people walking around aren’t people at all. 😳👽 Then Nada walks into a bank carrying a shotgun and delivers the line that became legendary: “I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass…and I’m all out of bubblegum.” 😂🔥 Come on. It doesn’t get much better than that. And we can’t forget that absolutely INSANE alley fight between Piper and Keith David that seems to last half the movie—all because Frank refuses to put on a pair of sunglasses. 😂 But underneath all the action and craziness, Carpenter was taking shots at consumerism, advertising, greed and how easily people can be manipulated without even realizing it. That’s probably why They Live still gets people talking almost 40 years later. It’s cheesy. It’s strange. It’s completely over the top. And it’s GLORIOUSLY 80s. Who else considers They Live one of the most underrated cult classics of the 80s? 🕶️👽🔥
