Someone told me my repair framework sets the bar too high… But is it really a high standard to want someone to acknowledge how their behavior impacted you? Or to own their part? Or to actually do something different differently going forward? Those aren’t high standards. It’s basic respect for yourself and others. And a lot of us didn’t grow up having this modeled to us. We never saw what it looked or sounded like. We learned to tolerate instead. To move on before anything was actually resolved. To accept behavior the next day that pretended like the night before never happened and when it was brought up, we were silenced, dismissed or told “that was yesterday, today’s a new day.” We learned to accept “I’m sorry” with no changed behavior. And now we mistake based in human decency for asking for too much. I cannot begin to tell you how many times I’ve received comments or messages from individuals saying that it is ridiculous to expect these reparative steps out of other people. 👉So I want to push back on that and remind you you’re not asking for too much. Without repair there’s no rebuilding trust. Without repair there’s an elephant in the room that turns into resentment. Without repair safety isn’t present. Instead you have tolerance. Unspoken hurts and expectations. Breached trust. Emotional distance. And it becomes difficult to continue a healthy relationship at a certain point.
