The school system often ends up protecting the bullies by hiding behind student privacy policies, refusing to provide parents with enough information about who is repeatedly bullying their child. While protecting student privacy is important, it should never come at the expense of another child’s safety. Parents have a right to know when their child is being targeted, what the school is doing about it, and what measures are being taken to prevent further harassment. When schools withhold critical information and fail to take meaningful action, they leave victims vulnerable while allowing the problem to continue. Protecting a bully’s privacy should never mean sacrificing the safety of the child being bullied.
