Florida's dengue outbreak is accelerating fast enough that health officials are updating case counts weekly — and the numbers keep nearly doubling.   The Florida Department of Health reported 38 new locally acquired dengue cases in the week ending September 5, pushing the state's 2026 total to 111 — up from just 73 a week earlier. Hillsborough County, home to Tampa, is driving the surge almost single-handedly: cases there jumped from 59 to 95 in a single week, meaning one county now accounts for roughly 85% of all locally transmitted dengue in the entire state.
"Locally acquired" is the key distinction here — it means someone was infected by a mosquito bite within Florida itself, not while traveling abroad, which is the more common source of U.S. dengue cases. The cycle works like this: a traveler returns home already infected, typically from a country like Cuba, which alone accounts for the majority of Florida's separately tracked 160 travel-associated cases this year. A local mosquito then bites that person while the virus is active in their blood, and that same mosquito goes on to infect someone else nearby — turning a single imported case into a local cluster.   Eleven Florida counties are now under a mosquito-borne illness advisory or alert, and Tampa Bay has ramped up mosquito spraying in response. Dengue causes fever, headache, joint and muscle pain, and rash, and typically resolves within a week — but roughly 1 in 20 infected people develop severe dengue, a life-threatening complication requiring immediate medical care.   Case totals are expected to keep climbing through the rest of mosquito season, as lab-confirmed results continue catching up to actual infections already underway.   source: Florida Department of Health, Florida Arbovirus Surveillance Report, Week 36 (2026).
