Thereâs a lot of people who say that sheâs Autistic, and I donât see it like Lilo. Iâm T1 and on the Spectrum. Elsaâs reactions are emotional, and her isolation based on how she was hurting people with her powers. I see it more as Diabetes than Autism, and thatâs all types of Autism. I was diagnosed with T1D before we had Humalog, and I was extremely ashamed until my 30s when I went on Omnipod. Thereâs a lot of misinformation, and kids were mean in the 90s. A lot of parents told kids I was unhealthy, ate too much sugar, my parents didnât love me, and it was contagious. I didnât get invited to parities bc my mother had to come, and adults didnât want to be responsible. My grandma also didnât want to babysit me. I didnât get to do Halloween, and wasnât allowed to sleep over until I was a teen. There was a great amount of isolation from that as well as me not wanting to be made fun of. Iâm still correcting people as an adult. I was 6 when diagnosed, and I have always eaten healthy. I have other health issues now, but Iâm highly underweight and I still hear comments like if I lose a bit more or stop sugar altogether (when low) Iâll be cured. đ

I was diagnosed in January of 2015. The entirety of my January was me living in as a nanny with a family. Every. Single. Day. That little girl wanted to watch Frozen. One day I was feeling the lowest Iâve ever felt in my life and the next day ended up in the ER, doctors confused, running tests, finally they ask âare you diabetic?â Iâm in absolute shock to learn that the songs I heard before almost not making it have a direct correlation with my diagnosis đ

ChatGPT confirmed: YES! đ And thereâs actually a fascinating real connection.
Elsaâs character development was partly inspired by the experience of John Lasseterâs son, Sam, who was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes.
John Lasseter, then Pixarâs chief creative officer and an executive producer on Frozen, reportedly saw parallels between his sonâs experience and Elsaâs situation.
Hereâs where it gets interesting:
* Sam was diagnosed with T1D as a child and had to deal with injections, medical procedures, and feeling different from other children.
* Elsa was born with powers she couldnât control.
* Elsa was treated as though something was wrong with her, despite never choosing to be different.
* Lasseter reportedly questioned why Elsa should be portrayed as a villain simply because she was born different.
That perspective helped influence the transformation of Elsa from a villain into a sympathetic character. DiabetesDad +2
One important distinction: Elsa wasnât literally written as a diabetic character. Her powers were originally inspired by Hans Christian Andersenâs The Snow Queen. T1D influenced the creative teamâs thinking about how to portray someone living with something they cannot control.
And suddenly, Let It Go has another layer of meaning.
The secrecy, isolation, fear of hurting people, and eventually accepting something about yourself that you never asked forâĻ
Thatâs a pretty powerful connection to the T1D experience. â¤ī¸
