The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday declined to hear President Donald Trump’s appeal seeking to overturn the $5 million civil verdict that found him liable for sexually abusing writer E. Jean Carroll and later defaming her. The justices denied the request without explanation, leaving the jury’s 2023 verdict in place. There were no public dissents. Trump’s legal team argued that the trial was unfair because the judge allowed testimony from two other women who also accused Trump of sexual misconduct decades ago. His attorneys said those rulings improperly influenced the jury and violated federal evidence rules. Trump has denied all of the allegations. In response to the decision, Trump’s lawyers criticized the ruling, calling the case a politically motivated “witch hunt” and saying he will continue focusing on his presidential agenda. Carroll’s attorneys urged the Supreme Court not to take the case, arguing the trial judge properly admitted the evidence and that there was no legal issue warranting review. Following Monday’s decision, Carroll’s legal team said the ruling ensures the jury’s verdict remains intact and marks the end of Trump’s effort to overturn the judgment. During the 2023 trial, Carroll testified that Trump sexually assaulted her inside a dressing room at Bergdorf Goodman in Manhattan during the mid-1990s.
