@hopewithholly: A lot of women were taught how to be “good” before they were ever taught how to be autonomous adults. Be agreeable. Be nice. Don’t upset anyone. Keep the peace. Be chosen. Be easy to love. But adulthood requires more than being likable. It requires self-trust, decision-making, boundaries, assertiveness, financial competence, emotional regulation, discernment, tolerance for disapproval, self-protection, and an identity that does not disappear inside a relationship. Those are not “male” qualities. They are human qualities. And agency does not mean becoming cruel, controlling, selfish, or incapable of compromise. It means understanding that your life is yours to manage. You can have strong boundaries and still be compassionate. You can speak your truth and still listen. You can make your own decisions and still care how those decisions affect other people. The goal is not to become harder. The goal is to become harder to control without losing your humanity.
