@therapyisabusiness: Therapists the money scripts are loud on this one. In a recent post several fellow therapists were saying that I needed to make some free for everyone. While the the project I was working on is a blog post that will be free for therapists to read, it got me thinking about how that demand for free access to someone's mental labor, something that took their time and energy to create, is the same thing we battle with in the therapy industry all the time. People assume because we are good at and enjoy the work we do, that we should do it for free. How is that working out for us? If you're a therapist feeling called out but realizing this is a type of thinking you no longer want to have, check out the blog post on money scripts or join us for the Money Shift Therapist CE Retreat in Belize to unpack all of this. #therapistsontiktok #therapistsoftiktok #therapistsoftiktok❤️ #privatepractice #therapybusiness

I’d like to share my take as someone who also earns additional income selling education for therapists, though mine is clinical training. I don’t think anyone is saying educational work shouldn’t be valued or paid. Business education can absolutely be valuable. But I think there’s understandable concern about relatively basic, freely available information being marketed to therapists as a secret to financial success with a premium price tag. What feels especially uncomfortable to me and I think others too is the circular promise: “Buy my course, and I’ll teach you how to make as much money as I do” when selling that course is how the person makes their money. The buyers’ spending creates the success being used to persuade ppl to buy. When that marketing targets burned-out therapists struggling to make ends meet, their financial challenges are essentially a sales opportunity. I’m not saying this is what you personally do. But I do think these concerns deserve discussion in our field and the discomfort many people feel about the business coaching therapy content is valid

And not all coaching programs are created equal. It’s important that people discern what they’re looking for, if they can afford it, and what doesn’t feel like the right fit (similar to therapy) in order to find value in what they pay for. I’ve learned that lesson the hard way and I don’t look at every coach as an MLM or scammer. A lot of coaches with higher ticket programs also produce a ton of free resources.

Hmmm. Nah. No one said give your services away for free. We’re saying make it affordable and stop targeting therapists who are already struggling when I’m pretty sure you didn’t have make a 3k+ “investment” in your business to learn what you did for free. It’s about balance and a lot of therapists now being “consultants” are forgetting that balance.
