@c5news: A Wetherspoons pub has been covered in poppies after a controversy over a veteran being turned away for wearing the symbol of remembrance last weekend. A veteran was denied entry to The Star in Gosport with a staff member being recorded on video telling him the poppy was “political” and he wouldn’t be served while wearing it. Councillor George Madgwick, who leads the Reform U group on Hampshire Council, said last week that the group had been meeting for a drink after campaigning and branded their treatment at the pub, “disgusting and shameful”. The chain later denied it had a poppy ban, saying that extra security measures were in place because of demonstrations in the Hampshire town. The confrontation took place on 25 October as an anti-immigration march, and a separate counter-demonstration were held in Gosport. A new video was posted on social media on Thursday showing a demonstration outside The Star. The clip was captioned: “It looks like the Gosport Wetherspoons are getting a taste of their own medicine.” Gosport has become a flashpoint for the migration crisis in recent weeks.
