@vistas.psychotherapy: Have you ever known something logically, but felt something completely different? 🧠 You know the presentation will probably go fine, but your stomach still drops. You know an argument ended days ago, but your shoulders are still tense. You can explain exactly why you shouldn't be worried, yet the feeling doesn't disappear. Why? Because our thoughts, emotions, and physical responses aren't separate systems. Our brains are constantly receiving and interpreting signals from the body. At the same time, our experiences, relationships, and learned patterns can influence how our bodies respond to the world around us. This is why understanding something intellectually doesn't always change how we feel physically. At Vistas, we take a mind-body approach to psychotherapy, recognizing that meaningful change can involve working in two directions: 🌿Top-down: Exploring thoughts, beliefs, experiences, and patterns through conversation. 🌿 Bottom-up: Gently noticing physical sensations, breathing, and grounding to support awareness and regulation. These approaches can complement one another, and therapy is always adapted to the individual. Sometimes a new perspective helps the body settle. Other times, finding a little physical steadiness makes it easier to explore a new perspective. A broader view of healing means making room for both. Read Amanda Carver's latest blog, The Mind-Body Connection: Why a Broader View of Healing Means We Treat One Nervous System, to learn more about how this approach shapes our work at Vistas.
