@norbertobriceno: Kinda Interesting Things #369: “The Bowery: Devil’s Mile,” the latest exhibition at @The New Museum If you visit the New Museum’s latest exhibition, you’ll come across this beautifully restored 1836 hand-pumper fire engine, used by Lady Washington Engine Company No. 40 to protect New York City from fires. But look closely, and you’ll notice the elaborate woodwork, brass details, and hand-painted scenes, including one depicting Victory laying a wreath on a bust of George Washington, and another showing Pocahontas pleading with her father to spare Captain John Smith. There’s something striking about this wagon: a machine built to fight fires and protect a city marked by chaos and conflict, yet decorated with such beauty and artistry. Kinda like the Bowery. “The Bowery: Devil’s Mile” traces roughly five centuries of the Bowery’s history through objects, photographs, and artwork, beginning with its roots as a Lenape footpath and moving through colonization, farmland, skid row, and eventually the downtown art scene. And throughout that history, you see the Bowery’s contradictions: hardship and entertainment, danger and spectacle, poverty and creativity.
