#Repost @lordrarerock ... HAPPY HEAVENLY BIRTHDAY, FREDDIE MERCURY - Born Farrokh Bulsara in Stone Town, Zanzibar, on September 5, 1946, Freddie Mercury grew from a young boy studying piano at boarding school in India into one of the most extraordinary frontmen and vocalists music has ever produced. After his family settled in England, his path eventually crossed with Brian May and Roger Taylor, and with John Deacon completing the lineup, Queen became the vehicle for a talent impossible to contain within a single genre. Freddie had a beautiful and unmistakable voice, but what separated him was the complete package. He was a gifted pianist, a brilliant songwriter, a natural arranger and perhaps the most commanding live performer of his generation. He wrote “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “Somebody to Love,” “We Are the Champions,” “Killer Queen,” “Don’t Stop Me Now” and “Crazy Little Thing Called Love,” songs that could move between opera, gospel, hard rock, pop and vaudeville. At the piano he could sound delicate one moment and enormous the next, while onstage he understood instinctively how to turn tens of thousands of people into participants in the performance. Queen’s 1985 Live Aid set remains perhaps the purest demonstration of that ability, with Freddie controlling Wembley Stadium. Even the features that made him self conscious became inseparable from the icon. His prominent overbite was caused by four extra teeth, and although he was reportedly conscious of it, he never had them corrected, believing surgery might affect his voice. That voice, paired with May’s unmistakable guitar orchestration, Taylor’s powerful drumming and harmonies, and Deacon’s melodic bass work, helped Queen sell hundreds of millions of records and become one of the defining bands in rock history. Freddie died on November 24, 1991, at only 45, one day after publicly confirming that he had AIDS. More than three decades later, his presence has hardly diminished. The records still sound enormous, the performances still feel dangerous and alive, and generations who never had the chance to see him perform know exactly who Freddie Mercury was.
