It took me 50 years to finally realize I owed myself the grace to believe what I endured was worth my recognition and healing. “It wasn’t as bad as…” really really hits home. I lived it.

When I was 18 I was drugged and raped twice. I thought it was my fault bc I took the drink even if I didn’t finish it and bc I went back the next day so confused and took a drink again. This was 2003. It took me until Cornell case to accept that it was really true what happened and that it’s still not my fault.

I wasn't able to admit it until I had a good therapist that held space and gave me tools.

Self compassion, it seems to me, is in direct conflict with compartmentalization often employed to survive horrific and inexplicable experiences. Sadly, it is human nature to withhold from ourselves what we so willingly give to others. Anouska, you are so deserving of self compassion and as much compassion as is offered by others, even more. Be kind to yourself, always.

Nonviolent r @ pe is so insidious. My brain still tries to minimize the many times it happened to me. The worse one is the one I can’t even remember bc I was drggd. Even when my gyno asked why I was ripped I thought he just accidentally did something. It wasn’t until i was told how long I was there and yet my memory was a small portion of that time. Now I wonder if his roommate anticipated. I still have to tell myself that it happened and that I didn’t deserve it.

The depth of your courage is immeasurable. We deserve Grace and compassion as we have all had to do what we felt necessary to survive 🙏

i was told and believed for so long it wasn't rape. both times I passed out alone. both times I woke up with him inside of me. I didn't fight. I just let him finish. thats why I brushed it off as not rape.

we are a victim of an attempted femicide but we were told it would be easier for us to say it was a car crash and when we didn't agree to that we just called it an assault, we've dedicated our lives to advocating for other survivors however it's because no one advocated for us even ourselves so thank you for this 💙👑💙

I was molested by my stepdad at the age of 10ish…don’t have a memory of rape so bc of that I’ve minimized my experience. When I recently told my my mother, she said…I don’t believe that. She chooses not to believe me and I’ve chosen to not have her in my life.

I still can't HONESTLY speak about SIMPLE women's rights to friends or family ESPECIALLY my two son's. Im 57 and literally melted down at my 27 year son last night. I can finally admit it but just cannot verbally form a sentence that isnt just brimming with anger. Ive come a long way, but with every passing day since we let this monster back in DC Its worse. ❤️

I’m so sorry for this happening to you! It’s my mission to help educate and protect my grandchildren, as I did my daughters, from becoming victims of abuse. Whether physical emotional or mental it’s never acceptable! I hope you and all your sister survivors get the ultimate justice. 🥺

How were they able to lure such young children to them? You would think parents would be involved to watch over them. Its all terrible

The Renaissance Man :
I was almost.. removed from the planet by a drunk driver when I was a child. Amongst other things that nearly did it.. but this one illustrated something else that resonates still. When the EMTs arrived their faces registered shock and abject horror. This was replaced rather quickly with, "Oh well we're too late" body language and actual words. They were more concerned about the trainee riding along who appeared to be in more bodily shock than I was by that point. I had already been baking on the ground in the desert sun for half an hour as my father attempted first aid to the jumbled limbs before him. My mother was sobbing uncontrollably. I was calm but still "freezing". The EMTs were having a good time though because they said it didn't matter, let him learn (the trainee) and used it as a training exercise with no repurcussions. After a bone jarring trip to the ER ..forty five minutes later, the doctor told my parents, "Don't get your hopes up." How have I minimized it? Actually I haven't. I think the rage at some stranger dictating whether or not I would survive has been a catalyst for extreme survival.
