@hurrdatone: Before Aksarben Village had restaurants, shops and apartments, it was home to one of the busiest horse racing tracks in the country! Pat and Ana look back at Ak-Sar-Ben's incredible history, from crowds of more than 31,000 racing fans to a Triple Crown winner buried somewhere on the former grounds. Plus, the unforgettable day the 1975 Omaha tornado threatened the track. Did you ever go to the races at Ak-Sar-Ben?
used to be a great place, not a bunch of overpriced establishments and poor parking

What killed Ak-Sar-Ben?
1. Bluffs Run Greyhound Park opened in 1986. People crossed the river to bet on dogs instead of horses. Dog races were more frequent, which meant more opportunities to gamble.
2. Casino gambling expanded in Iowa. Slot machines and casinos eventually provided even more competition. Nebraska's racetrack couldn't compete with the variety of gambling across the river.

we used to have places like peony Park and Aksarben race track but they decided to stop allowing people to smile and have fun in the city. now all they let you do is go to places to eat church and jail

They used to have a pancake breakfast and balloon lift off. It was during Septemberfest. And where Baxter Are a was the Arena. The Lancers played there.

Horse racing. When it was full capacity in 1975 the tornado went over it and no one was hurt. That was amazing.
