I think a movie being about a musician or band doesn't automatically make it a musical. a musical is where plot development in the actual story is done through song and dance. if the scenes outside of recording the songs as a musician in the movie, were done in song, then it would be a musical.

Michael isn't a musical though. It's a music biopic. There is music in it, but what makes a musical musical isn't just that it has music. It's a movie about a guy who created music, and it sometimes plays that music. But this is primarily a drama piece.

I disagree with you saying Micheal is a musical. A musical uses song as part of the scripted story telling purpose. Wicked was a musical. Lalaland was a musical. Micheal was a biopic about a musician.
