@oddityvault72: On October 30, 1961, the Soviet Union detonated the Tsar Bomba over Novaya Zemlya, an Arctic archipelago, in the most powerful nuclear explosion ever. A Tu-95 bomber carried the weapon, which was so huge that the plane's bomb bay doors had to be removed and the aircraft painted in reflective white to survive the flash. A giant parachute slowed the bomb's fall so the crew could get roughly 30 miles away before it went off. Even with the design cut to about half its planned yield (around 50 megatons, roughly 3,000 times the Hiroshima bomb), the fireball was visible nearly 600 miles away, the mushroom cloud climbed about 40 miles into the sky, and windows shattered in Norway and Finland. Seismic instruments registered the shockwave circling the Earth multiple times. It was a bizarre mix of engineering stunt and political theater, a bomb too big to ever be useful as a weapon.
