@thebasementyardcast: Does Data Have Weight? @thefrankalvarez @joesantagato @thebasementyard #thebasement #thebasementyard #joesantagato #podcast #clips
Frank is actually right, you are putting something in there, it does change weight, and it is measurable. You are putting electrons in there which come from the power source. They are very light, so it changes in weight at a level that is only measurable with high precision lab electronics. But he’s right.

It's a dumb question, but theoretically, it would be lighter with data because it's removing electrons in the empty gates.

there is a weight difference. you would need an insane scale to measure it.

It wouldn't change. you are simply changing all the zeros to ones and zeros through switches that already existed on that flashdrive.

pretty sure it gets lighter when full. an electron represents a 0, missing electron represents a 1. its kinda like etched text on metal adds data but removes mass.

technically no as electrons have no mass however the microscopic level it would be lighter due to heat transfer of the switches causing the material to wear itself down

valid question though cause data has a microscopic amount of physical weight because storing digital information alters the physical state and energy level of electrons. On a massive scale, the entire internet weighs roughly 50 grams or about the same as a single large egg.

This is an excellent question. My first thought is that it would weigh less, because maybe it's basically carving out material rather than adding material. E=mc2 means energy is mass. Everything is energy. My greatest wish is that people stop calling other people stupid.

electrons weigh so little that when you calculate the weight of an atom, you ignore the electrons

great question, the answer is yes. E=mc² so if the energy of the flash drive changes, so does the mass. the change is so small no current scale could perceive the difference but there’s change nonetheless.
