@drbecky_s: When you’re falling into a black hole, how long does it take after you cross the event horizon of a black hole, that sphere of no return, before you reach the singularity? The place where all the matter is crushed down into an infinitely dense infinitely small region of space. How long it actually takes to reach the singularity after becoming trapped beyond the event horizon depends on how massive the black hole is. So for a black hole the same mass as the Sun, it’s a few microseconds, but for a more massive black hole it's longer because the event horizon is also larger. So it's around a minute for the black hole at the centre of the Milky Way, and a few hours for a supermassive black hole billions of times heavier than the Sun. And rather counterintuitively, if you tried to resist the pull of singularity once you’re past the event horizon, by accelerating away from it, for example if you were in a spacecraft firing your engines, that would actually mean you reached the singularity sooner. Because time and space swap inside a black hole. And the singularity becomes a moment in time, a moment in your future, rather than a place in space. So if you accelerate, in whatever direction, in your frame of reference, you get there sooner. At least, that’s the simplified picture of a black hole, the one we all tend to learn about. But real black holes also spin. And that changes everything. Including the nature of the singularity itself, which becomes a donut shape. At least, an infinitely thin donut. Which does even weirder things to time. I have to disagree. time beyond the event horizon changes all together and stops at one point, so ore seconds and microseconds mean very little where light can int travel in one direction

What baffles me about blackholes....What are they ? like physically, If its created by massive stars collapsing in on itself then...where did that star go ?

Can confirm, I’m commenting from inside the singularity and it is NOT fun here :/

I just think time would be so distorted, it would feel infinite.

I think you would be dead long before you reach the black hole. Super-fast debris, intense heat, and radiation will kill you first.

It makes no difference how big the black hole is, as it does not happen, as it is physically impossible to go beyond the theoretical event horizon …

So does that mean that we are in a black hole?

Incorrect. I was beyond the event horizon of Sagittarius A* last week. There was a Gregg's. I got a steak bake and a yum yum. 👍

Stop confusing people. Singularity is a position, but do to the fact that no matter how fast you travel, you’ll reach it, it becomes a place in time, like tomorrow. But it is still a place in time

What about time dilation? Wouldn’t the “time” taken from the observers perspective be “infinitely long” wouldn’t they basically experience the whole life of the universe play out as they go “to the end of time” ?

it's so complicated to comprehend that this is reality and could really happen if we were close enough to a black hole. it's so mind bending. do you have practical advice for how to really comprehend it better?

And you will always arrive just in time to experience the big “bounce”. Because all the matter it will take in over it’s entire lifespan is already there. And that’s the creation of a new universe with a brand new spacetime axis and its own set of physical laws, slightly different than its “mother” universe. Darwin on a galactic scale …

Is this time relative to ME, the world’s most unfortunate Astronaut, or relative to an observer watching me fall in? Because doesn’t time slow down near black holes?
