I was trying to say, As an African, I’ve been under every comment, every video, and every live discussing this situation, educating people and reminding them that this is not the time to point fingers at Black Americans. The Bronx is diverse, but it has a large African, Hispanic, and Caribbean population. I’ve been educating people and explaining why we need to stop creating this unnecessary division and finger-pointing between Africans and Black Americans. At the end of the day, the details of what happened have not even come out yet. We don’t know who did it, when they did it, how they did it, or why they did it. So why are we already creating a back-and-forth between Africans and Black Americans? It’s already happening, and we do not need to fuel it any further.

But we cannot use this as grounds to dismiss the larger issue at hand. Many of these diaspora conversations stem from a longstanding lack of accountability for the bullying, discrimination, and harm immigrants have experienced because of their identities. And yes, Black Americans have experienced harm from African communities as well, which also deserves accountability. However, RIGHT NOW, we are discussing an African boy who was killed because of xenophobia, and that needs to remain the focus. There needs to be more empathy and understanding surrounding WHY people are angry. Ultimately, this speaks to a much larger issue of discrimination that immigrants, particularly African immigrants, continue to face, including within the Black community itself. Acknowledging that reality does not invalidate anyone else’s experiences, but it does require us to confront the harm rather than deflect from it.
