I need to use these. I had to use one and I didn’t notice it was tied up. I had a seizure in the bathroom and hit my head really bad. If I wasn’t able to call 999 I probably would’ve been worse of. Please stop tangling these, they save lives!!

It’s unfortunately common that older people pass while trying to poop. They push down to get it out which stimulate the vagus nerve, leading to a cardiac arrest. Sometimes they aren’t found for days depending where at. Horrible. Or they fall (also very common)

It's often cleaning staff that ties the strings up so they can clean. Sometimes they forget to untie it unfortunately

i will say, when you untie them yourself make sure it's fully straight dangling down. de-tangling it is all well and good but there needs to be 0 interference as even it being over that handle can mean it wont go off when pulled! unfortunately this one in the video is poor design choice since that toilet paper?? box is directly below it. this should be reported to whoever necessary and moved

I had to pull one once and was not coherent enough to grab it if it hadn’t been such a long string. it was terrifying enough to need it, I can only imagine what it would be like to not be able to reach it. don’t ever be the person that ties it up.

As someone who has tonic clonic seizures and can/has been hospitalized over them, if I’m in the er/hospital and need the bathroom, I’ll make sure to tie that string around my closest hand/finger before I start using the bathroom if the door forces itself all the way shut because of how horrified I am of having a seizure, falling and not being found, imagine how terrifying it’d be to fall and be conscious the entire time unable to reach the one thing that could help you. Don’t fuck with the pull string.

I work at a hospital and I cannot tell you how many people tie it up. Sometimes it’s not even the patients that do it, it’s their family members who do it because, “it looked tacky”, or, “it was in the way.” Knowing that it could save their family member in an emergency.
