Do this with me right after your next meal. Reflux Revolution Series, Part 1: the LES Lock. Your LES is the valve at the top of your stomach, and it's wrapped by the crural diaphragm, a muscle you can train. When you breathe deep into your belly, that muscle tightens around the valve and helps hold it closed. The LES Lock is 1 to 5 minutes of diaphragmatic breathing immediately after meals. Breathe in through your nose for 4, letting your belly rise and your rib cage expand 360 degrees (front, sides, and back). Breathe out for 6 as your belly falls. Right after a meal your stomach is at its fullest, so this is when the valve needs the most support. The research backs the timing. In a Mayo Clinic randomized trial of people with daytime GERD, belly breathing after a meal cut reflux episodes from about 2.6 to 0.4 and raised pressure at the valve with every in-breath. When they kept it up at home, acid in the esophagus in the two hours after eating dropped by more than half. It builds with practice too. In a 4-week randomized study, people doing breathing training cut their time with acid in the esophagus from 9.1% to 4.7%. Those who kept going for 9 months were using about a quarter of the PPI they had been taking. Pair it with my 5+1 Method (five slow breaths plus one gratitude) BEFORE meals to get your nervous system ready to digest. The LES Lock comes AFTER, when the valve needs backup. Part 2 is Nov 4: building your reflux nutrition plan. My free 14-day Reflux Reset guide is at the link in my bio. 📚 Halland M et al., 2021, Am J Gastroenterol, randomized controlled trial, n=23 adults with upright GERD + 10 controls, PMID 33009052. Eherer AJ et al., 2012, Am J Gastroenterol, randomized controlled study, n=19, PMID 22146488. #LESlock #refluxtok #acidreflux #breathwork #GERD
