For most children, Halloween means costumes, trick-or-treating, and coming home with a bag full of candy. But for 8-year-old Timothy O’Bryan, Halloween night in 1974 would tragically be his last. Timothy had spent the evening trick-or-treating with his father, Ronald Clark O’Bryan, his sister, and other neighborhood children. During the evening, Ronald gave the children large Pixy Stix candy sticks. Unknown to them, the candy had been laced with cyanide. Later that night, Timothy ate one. He quickly became seriously ill, suffering convulsions and other symptoms of poisoning. Despite efforts to save him, he died. He was just 8 years old. As investigators looked into his death, they discovered that four other children had also received poisoned candy, although none of them consumed it. The investigation eventually focused on Timothy’s father. Prosecutors presented evidence that Ronald had taken out life insurance policies on his children and had poisoned the candy in an attempt to collect the money. In 1975, Ronald was convicted of capital murder and sentenced to death. He was executed by lethal injection on March 31, 1984. The case became widely known as the Candyman murder case and remains one of the most infamous crimes associated with Halloween. Behind every true crime case is a real person whose life mattered. Timothy was not simply part of a headline or a Halloween tragedy. He was a little boy with a whole life ahead of him. Today, we remember Timothy O’Bryan. May he never be forgotten. 🧡 Had you heard of Timothy’s story before? #ThisDayInTrueCrime #October31 #HalloweenTrueCrime #TimothyOBryan #TrueCrimeHistory
