And knowing the correct first aid technique could make the difference between life and death. When a baby is choking, the recommended technique involves back blows and chest thrusts, not back thrusts. For an infant under one year: * Back blows: Position the baby face-down, supporting the head and neck, with the head lower than the chest. Give up to 5 firm back blows using the heel of your hand, targeting the area between the shoulder blades. * Chest thrusts: Turn the baby face-up while supporting the head and neck. Give up to 5 chest thrusts using two fingers, pressing on the lower half of the breastbone (sternum), just below the nipple line. Avoid pressing on the very bottom tip of the breastbone. For an older child, the approach is different and involves back blows and abdominal thrusts, depending on the child’s age and size. A quick correction: In the video, I mistakenly referred to back blows as “back thrusts.” The correct medical term is BACK BLOWS. Every parent, caregiver, teacher, nanny and anyone who works with children should understand how to recognise choking and respond appropriately.
