I said this on Twitter: I, as a writer, acknowledge that my works are downloadable and therefore spreadable off of Ao3. But all I ask is that people try and go back to appreciate the fic on the actual platform once the archive is back up. I’ve had some nasty responses to this sentiment and it’s incredibly discouraging when all authors are asking is for people to leave FREE support on the fic they upload. It’s not people begging for clout or demanding engagement. It’s a simple ask in a tricky situation when we aren’t even 100% if the platform will come back in a month.

If you publish on a website that allows a download you’re giving consent to that fic being downloaded and shared.

People act like the download button gives them the ability to do whatever with the fic. The Download is an accessibility option!! I have no issue eith my works being uploaded to Google drive, I write all of my stuff in Google (so the ai stuff is not going to kill me), but I would be angry to find my fic uploaded to another website without my permission, which has started happening because of these Google drives. Ao3 is not gone forever. There is no need to "preserve" fics like they are gone forever. If an author is not okay with the Google drives, take it off and leave it. Don't throw a fit. Don't be upset with them. Don't search through their shit to harass them. Its that simple. For authors, stop reporting the drives. Politely reach out and try to get your stuff removed. It's that simple. We're a community. Act like it.

It frustrates me that people don't get the concept of downloading for personal use ≠ downloading to reupload onto another site. Sure, download my fics onto your tablet or phone for personal reading. Hell, share them with a friend, idc. But do not reupload them without permission to a 3rd party site. I agreed to have my docs posted BY ME on AO3 and nowhere else. It is against AO3 TOS to distribute fanfics without permission from the author and tbh I hope they go after the people who have been doing this 🤷‍♂️

I think whether you like it or not if you upload something to an archive you have to accept it will be shared ever which way the platform allows. Its polite to go back and engage with the author once you can do so but I wouldnt say it unethical not to. As for AI unfortunately anything uploaded to the Internet will probably find its way into AI eventually.

I find this debate really interesting because I actually think both opinions are valid and invalid at the same time. Because at the end of the day, they're fanfiction—they're based on someone else's story.

Goes both ways. If authors say it makes them uncomfortable and prevailing opinion is “we don’t care, you signed up for this” then there should be zero crying if authors take the stories down and stop sharing

if the fic asks people to not share it in the authors notes then that should be respected but otherwise i think it's fine

what frustrates me is that there is no legal safety nets on a mass drive. there are no consent locks (like ao3) ao3 has lawyers to assist with any situation. its widely why a lot of authors post there because they give protection. just because i could have had my fanfic scraped once through ai does not mean i want it to be done over and over again either. if authors are okay with a mass public drive than cool. but, if an author says hey idc if you keep a personal copy but prefer to have my fic only mass available on ao3, it should be respected. but instead people are attacking authors for asking for boundaries. that is why a lot of authors are now committed to deleting all their work from ao3 once it comes live, because those not caring about authors feelings and uploading are failing at practcing the art of consent.

Wasn’t the entire purpose of AO3 built on on importing and preserving (archiving) fics from databases and sites that were no longer being maintained? I’m not really sure that downloading fics to your own Google Drive and then sharing them is all that different on an ethical level? I wish it weren’t true, but privacy and control of your own content on the internet is a myth. Once you put something on a public platform, it’s very hard to prevent it from being shared.

I personally don’t care if they download it. I do care if they are uploading it to another site. I thought one of the main hard no’s of fanfiction was that you don’t take and upload a fic that wasn’t yours.

I fear what’s being missed is that if you are uploading a fic to AO3, with downloads available, people were already storing your fic on Google Drive if it’s one of their faves. People download and store their fave fics.

I don't care if people download my fics. I don't care if they share my fics. I don't care if they never give me a single kudo or comment. I DO care if they re-upload to a platform that feeds it to ai. That said, my only response will be to be sad and a little mad about it. My fanfics don't have the copyright protection of my original fiction, and claiming them puts me at direct odds with original IP holders, and undermines the foundations of AO3. That's too big a price just because I'm bummed ai stole MORE of my work.

Something I think may be lost/not considered: by re-uploading the work to a drive as a public facing collection (a secondary archive, as some are saying) it’s removing the author. I’m not talking about credit, I’m talking about creative control. When an author posts on ao3, they can make edits at any time. How likely is it that, when the site is back up, people will re-upload fics to this drive when an author makes edits? I know people can download fics from ao3 and it’s encouraged, but it feels different. When you’re downloading a fic for personal consumption, you’re accepting that it is a static document that may eventually be “out of date”. Re-uploading said static versions to a publicly shared collection of fics that have largely been uploaded without authors’ consent just feels…idk, disrespectful? I’m mortified any time I find a typo in my works; the idea of there being some error-riddled preserved version of my works that is being publicly discussed/widely shared without even the option to see how people respond to my works via kudos/comments…idk the whole thing just makes me wary.

There is exactly one defense that Google Drive has for AI scraping, and that is to leave the file on private. Putting it to public - according to Google's TOS itself - gives CONSENT to AI to scrape the files. AO3 does NOT give consent to AI scraping and actively tries to limit it as much as possible. The drives these fics are being reuploaded to (which is against Ao3's TOS, is says that private use for downloaded works is fine and sharing with a friend, but massive reuploading and sharing like what's being done falls under a TOS violation) are given express permission for the works to be scraped without consent of the writers. All my works are private, and I was told privated works wouldn't be put onto the drives. My fics are apparently on these drives anyways, as I found out yesterday morning. I don't consent to my works being available to AI scraping or reuploaded or reposted elsewhere without my knowledge or consent. It has nothing to do with engagement, it's that the fics are mine - I've spent YEARS on some of my fics, and it's upsetting that people feel so entitled to consuming fic that they don't respect how much work I've put into it by just... respecting that I ONLY want my works on the sites I've posted them to. And as an ARTIST, too, it's giving me whiplash that people will defend fanart from being reuploaded/reposted without permission but those same people are saying that fics "don't belong to the writer" because of a download button. Like, the option to download a piece of fanart is available on most sites where people share their fanart. All one needs to do is right click/press and hold on the image and select download/save. A download option on AO3 is mostly for the option of putting it into text-to-speech and/or to read later offline. Neither download options for fanart and fanfic are there so people can take the works and reupload/repost elsewhere. The fact that people are calling writers entitled for not wanting their works to be shared elsewhere - just like artist say for their fanart - is insane.

Eh, I assumed that even before AO3 went down, people were already downloading fics and then uploading them to Google Drive as a backup option. We authors have to know that there isn't a way to prevent this. Yes, it would be nice of readers to return to the fics when AO3 comes back and leave kudos and comments. But really, the ability to download works means that sharing and storage are encouraged modes of fandom participation.

Downloading and sharing with friends is fine. Creating your own archives is not. Most authors have other socials that they post on. Go find their other accounts.

As an author I would of course prefer people don't share my work on an sites that may allow it to be scraped by AI.But also I know that posting on a site that allows downloading means that I have given my consent for my work to be accessed off site, so all I ask is that if you read it please find it when the site comes back up and leave me a kudos or comments.

Honestly, it bothers me. I intentionally moved my writing onto anti-ai platforms from Google Docs because of data scraping concern. I even had my fics locked for awhile. I would rather someone reach out to me and ask for a copy, or have a pdf be passed around.

As an author, I’m not comfortable with it. I don’t understand how everyone feels that it’s ethical to add authors fics to these random google drives. We already know google docs scraps for AI so what happens when google has a leak and these fics that are placed in the drives are all just leaked/scrapped for ai. In ref to ao3 getting scrapped, I have my fics locked on ao3 due to AI scraping. I’m aware that I’m probably the odd ball but idk why the consensus everyone comes to is “they are going to probably be scrapped anyway” bc atp to me that sounds like the gun control argument that we have in america. Not to give such a dramatic example but when us americans call for gun control people say “well ppl are still going to get guns even if we add more laws” well yes that’s true but we can at least do the most we can to negate it being easy for people to obtain guns? Just like can we not give authors respect and at least try to negate it getting scraped? Can people really not wait 2-4 weeks? I think doing this is extremely dramatic/selfish and also has highlighted ao3 reader entitlement. This whole thing has completely icked me out 😭

As a writer, I have no problem with readers downloading my story and/or offline sharing with friends who ask for recs. Definitely no ETHICAL issue. My worry is so many writers seek out fanfiction for community, and when we start pulling everything offline, it removes the writers from that exact thing. Of course, recognizing AO3 is down, this is a unique situation, but I really hope everyone who finds new content writers through downloads makes sure to come back and engage with the writers in some way (otherwise we’re just a product, and that feels icky). If people want offline links, I’d advise they find the writers on socials! Many are sharing their own personal files for readers :) ALSO OBVS DON’T UPLOAD THEM TO OTHER SITES THOUGH, THAT’S SUPER NOT COOL 😢
