@universeseconds: You've probably seen these pictures. NASA calls it the Hand of God. But it's not a hand. 💀 It's what's left of a star that exploded, about 1,700 years ago as we see it, 17,000 light-years away. 🏙️ In the middle is a neutron star only about 19 km wide, the size of a city. 🌀 It spins almost 7 times every second, with a magnetic field 15 trillion times stronger than Earth's. ✋ It flings out a stream of particles at nearly the speed of light. That stream is the hand: 150 light-years across. 👀 We only see it in X-rays. With your own eyes, you'd never see the hand at all. Would you have seen a hand? 👇 🔭 Follow Universe in Seconds for more cosmic facts! Images: NASA/CXC/SAO/IXPE (2023), NASA/JPL-Caltech/McGill (NuSTAR, 2014), NASA/CXC/SAO/P.Slane et al.
