@sfchronicle: Since he vaulted from single-digits in the polls to win California’s primary election in June, governor candidate Xavier Becerra has played it safe. He’s explicitly avoided making lofty campaign promises like current Gov. Gavin Newsom did, cautioning that he only wants to commit to what he knows he can deliver. His strategy has stood in stark contrast to that of his opponent, Republican Steve Hilton, who has made a series of ambitious but far-fetched promises. After being battered in the primary over questions about his past record as California attorney general and U.S. Health and Human Services secretary, Becerra has spent the general election phase of the race talking about his values while mostly avoiding specifics. In an interview with the Chronicle the week before Election Day, Becerra stuck to that strategy. The Democrat declined to say if he would pursue a ballot measure to end the death penalty, only acknowledging he “could consider it.” He wouldn’t say whether he would steer more money toward the state’s CARE Court program to get mentally ill people into treatment and declined to give an opinion about whether California should make it easier to force people into treatment. He demurred when asked if he identified as a YIMBY or a NIMBY, though he said he would invite both sides to the table during housing policy discussions.
