My heart is aching for the family and loved ones of 15-year-old Javits Frimpong, a young Ghanaian whose life was tragically cut short when he was fatally shot on his way to school in the Bronx. His father has shared that Javits had experienced bullying. Authorities have not confirmed whether bullying was connected to the shooting, but this tragedy must move us to take every report of bullying seriously and to listen when our children tell us they are hurting. How can a child simply walking to school lose his life to violence? Our children deserve to feel safe in their schools, in their neighborhoods, and on the way to class. This is heartbreaking and unacceptable. As a chaplain, I see the pain and grief that violence leaves behind. It is too much. My prayers and deepest condolences are with Javits’ family, friends, classmates, and everyone mourning him. May God comfort and strengthen them. Parents, caregivers, schools, and communities: let’s teach our children empathy, kindness, and respect. Let’s take bullying seriously, pay attention to warning signs, and teach our young people that every life is precious. Perhaps we need to bring the Bible back into our homes and conversations not merely as words, but as a call to love our neighbors and treat one another with compassion.
