@bymuseum: Paris Street; Rainy Day (1877) By Gustave Caillebotte This Paris street is full of people. Yet almost everyone seems to be moving through a separate world. Caillebotte paints pedestrians beneath umbrellas, a cropped stranger entering from the right, and wet cobblestones reflecting the gray light of the city. The scene feels like a photograph taken by accident. But it was carefully planned. That may be why the painting still feels so familiar. You can be surrounded by strangers and still feel completely alone. Would that feel lonely to you, or freeing? Follow @bymuseum for more stories behind famous paintings.
