People make TikTok Shop look like magic. 😂 Find a trending product, post a few videos, and boom! Sales start rolling in.
But as someone with 7+ years of experience in ecommerce, I can tell you there's more to building a profitable online business than that.
Who pays for the product? Shipping? TikTok Shop fees? Creator commissions? Ads? Returns and refunds?
Let's say you generate $10,000 in sales. After an illustrative 6% platform fee ($600), 15% affiliate commission ($1,500), $3,000 in product costs, $800 for shipping and packaging, $1,000 in ads, and $300 set aside for returns, you're left with $2,800 before other overheads and taxes. Actual costs vary, of course.
And that's assuming your products sell. Views don't guarantee sales, sales don't guarantee profit, and one viral video doesn't guarantee consistent income.
Affiliate marketing can be a good starting point, but think about this: instead of putting all your effort into building someone else's brand just to earn a commission, why not consider building your own brand and directing that same effort into promoting something you own?
With your own brand, you have more control over your positioning, customer experience, and long-term growth, although you also take on more responsibility and risk.
TikTok Shop is a sales channel, not a magic money machine. Learn the numbers, understand the business model, and build with a strategy not just hype.
