@isittherightword: The VMAs Traded Cultural Impact for Corporate Compliance MTV’s entire legacy was built on being the countercultural pulse of youth rebellion, which makes watching it bow to corporate censorship and private equity buyouts even more pathetic. Whether it’s walling off Afrobeats and Latin pop into separate corners or actively silencing artists speaking up for Palestine, the network is doing everything it can to protect establishment interests instead of artistic integrity. The real defining musical moments of the year happened entirely outside of that room. While mainstream institutions continue to dilute themselves into irrelevance, independent creators and real culture are leaving them behind. I can’t remember the last time I watched the VMAs and that something I never thought would happen. Growing up, the VMAs were EVERYTHING. It always had the best performances - still talked about to this day like MJ and Britney!
