@soocanadian: Prime Minister Mark Carney did not address a question about whether U.S. President Donald Trump would be welcome in the newly launched Alliance for the Future between Canada and the European Union. During a joint news conference in Montreal on Friday, a reporter asked Carney whether Trump would be welcome in the alliance, which aims to deepen cooperation between Canada and the EU. Carney answered the reporter's first question but did not respond to the follow-up about the U.S. president. The question came as Canada and the EU launched the Alliance for the Future, with Carney proposing a new form of associate membership that would bring Canada closer to the European Union without full accession. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the proposed partnership was not directed against any other country. "To be crystal clear, this is a partnership not against anyone else, but for our common strength," she said. Von der Leyen acknowledged that the concept of associate membership was uncharted territory but said both sides had the ambition, trust and creativity to shape it together. Carney said Canada and the EU would determine the full substance, scale and scope of the proposed arrangement in the coming months.
