On the evening of September 16th, 2009, 24 year old Mitrice Richardson entered the parking lot of Geoffrey’s restaurant in Malibu, California. What followed would become a deeply troubling disappearance involving unanswered questions about her arrest, release from police custody, and eventual d**th. Mitrice Richardson travels 40 miles from South Los Angeles to Malibu, California. She dines at Geoffrey's restaurant, where staff and patrons observe highly erratic, manic behavior. After she was unable to pay her $89 dinner bill, restaurant staff contacted the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Deputies from the Malibu/Lost Hills Station responded to the scene. Officers reportedly administered a field sobriety test and determined that Mitrice was not int*xicated. However, after a small amount of mar*ju*na was reportedly discovered in her vehicle, she was arrested on suspicion of defrauding an innkeeper and mar*ju*na possession. Her vehicle was impounded, leaving her purse, cellphone, and other personal belongings inside. While Mitrice was in custody, her mother, Latice Sutton, contacted the sheriff’s station expressing concern about her daughter’s condition. She reportedly offered to come pick her up and wanted authorities to ensure her daughter was safe. Despite these concerns, Mitrice was released from the Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff’s Station at approximately 12:38 am on September 17th, 2009. She was released without her cellphone, purse, money, or transportation, as those belongings remained inside her impounded vehicle. Mitrice was now alone in an unfamiliar area in the middle of the night. At approximately 6:30 am, a resident in the Monte Nido area reported seeing a woman sleeping on the rear steps of his property. When the resident approached her, she reportedly became startled and ran away. The woman was later believed to have been Mitrice. This would become one of the last known sightings of her alive. On September 18th, 2009, Mitrice was reported missing. Her disappearance prompted an extensive search involving family members, volunteers, and law enforcement. Four months later, on January 9th, 2010, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department conducted a large-scale search involving more than 300 volunteers across an approximately 18-square-mile area to search for Mitrice. On August 9th, 2010, park rangers discovered human remains in a remote area of Dark Canyon in the Santa Monica Mountains near Monte Nido. The remains were later positively identified as those of Mitrice Richardson. Her d**th raised additional questions after investigators and the coroner’s office encountered issues surrounding the recovery and handling of her remains. Her cause of d**th was ultimately classified as undetermined, leaving her family without a definitive explanation of what happened. In 2011, Mitrice’s parents reached a $900,000 settlement with Los Angeles County over allegations involving the handling of her arrest and release from custody. In February 2017, the California Attorney General’s investigation concluded that there was insufficient evidence to bring criminal charges against anyone involved in her release. Her family has continued to challenge aspects of the investigation and has maintained concerns about the circumstances surrounding her disappearance and d**th. Mitrice Richardson’s case remains one of the most troubling cases involving a disappearance following release from police custody. More than a decade later, important questions about her final hours and the circumstances of her d**th remain unanswered. Perhaps one of the saddest aspects of this case is that Mitrice’s mother, Latice Sutton, spent years fighting for answers about what happened to her daughter.
