@alifeafterlayoff: Can a future employer find out you were fired? Sometimes. But probably not the way most job seekers think. Here’s what a background check, employment verification and reference check can actually reveal. #JobSearch #BackgroundCheck #InterviewTips #RecruiterTips #CareerTips
Nothing is verified lol unless you are going for a government job let’s be real here.

Well quick question, I was recently let go, that’s what I was told, to this day, I’m unaware of the actual reason, I remember the brief discussion beforehand but judging from the 1089 form, it does not state a cause or reason etc. So how common are these types of situations?

Jobs that require a security clearance you have to disclose if you got fired, but they don’t really care that you were fired unless it was for something major

Pre-employment background checks using third-parties are illegal until after an offer of employment and a wage agreement have been made first.DO NOT VOLUNTEER TO DO THEM!Algorithmic wage fixing is insane now and objecting to any type of electronic processing until after an offer of employment and a wage agreement are made first is a federally protected activity. If you are disqualified for opposition then SUE THEM!

With everyone using workday now, I wouldn’t be surprised if they can even see if you’ve ever been out on a performance plan for not meeting metrics, if you’ve had attendance issues, if you’ve been fired for any reason etc.

This is EXACTLY why it should be a bigger deal, when you are wrongfully terminated due to retaliation, requesting a reasonable accommodation, due to an ADA protected class. Good luck getting an appointment with the EEOC. I couldn't get an appointment until 2/27/2027.

I’m gonna call BS on reference checks. In my entire adult life, I have never been called as a reference. I’ve been listed as one a great many times, as both personal and professional. But, I have never been called to verify anything ever.

People have no idea about the reports that Equifax has on you regarding your employment history. It is wild. I got mine at one point to see what was in it and it is relatively accurate. They have to give you a copy if you request it.

Depending on the position a person is applying for there could be a child and adult abuse check. These are usually positions where you work with children and/or vulnerable adults.

Actually, there’s also a “background investigation” too for the public sector which in most cases uses The Work Number to augment dates. But during a BG Investigation, they get much more detailed information from employers.
