I think we sometimes overlook the struggles parents face as immigrants, especially those who come to America later in life. Imagine working long hours as a taxi driver just to make ends meet while trying to navigate an entirely different system. Perhaps the father genuinely didn't know how to handle the bullying situation. That doesn't excuse anything, but I think we need to consider the bigger picture while still holding parents accountable.

You need to have Grace. They just moved to America a year ago. He is working overtime in his taxi. They don’t know the Lay of the land. They don’t know the culture. They were trying to figure it out. If he knew how deep the problem was he would’ve fixed it, but he didn’t understand how bad it was.

I was bullied by black Americans. I told my mom. She took me out of public school and put me in private. It was hard financially for her and I am forever grateful.

Another take is there are neighborhoods that you should not live if you don’t want to loose your child/children… I had to leave a certain hood in Chicago because the teachers advised that my kids need to leave that hood if I don’t want to loose them. You’ll have to secure your family even if you have to leave the state. This story is so sad and I’ve cried my eyes out😢😔😞

I got lucky. My mom came to the school in her business suit and immediately took me out and put me in a private school. This is such a valid take.

I got EXTREMELY bullied in middle school and until I started fighting, the bullying never stopped! My parents did NOTHING! Had to defend myself

But he was killed for reporting the bullying. That’s exactly what concerns me. How do we prevent something like that from happening again? I know you mentioned that you would visit the school, investigate the situation, and speak with the bullies, but what happens when a child is afraid to report what’s happening because they fear retaliation? How would you ensure their safety and hold those responsible accountable? I think that’s an equally important part of addressing bullying. Especially since the kids had guns

I hear you but we have to also hold space for grace for immigrant parents. The culture they were raised in is not the same as America. American culture is different. Most are scared to lose their status or fear deportation. I think we need to create a support system for our family members that are vulnerable.

I feel like this goes back to some African parents themselves not knowing how to defend themselves against bullies too. This can also have a ripple effect on their kids as well. 🤔

It shouldn’t be that way but yes they definitely need to toughen up their children as soon as they get here. Also trying to fit in is not a bad thing. Americans kids go through it as well.

As an African immigrant I was bullied so bad in the 90s. My dad worked overnight just so he could sit in class with me the whole day because of being bullied
