Senior Dog Hand Signal Guide 👇 Lola just turned 14, and I've noticed she doesn't always turn around when I call her name. So to get out in front of things, we've been working on hand signals together. These are the ones we use. 👍 Good girl / good boy: thumbs up 👀 Look at me: point two fingers at your eyes 🍽️ Dinner: fingertips to your mouth 🦮 Walk: two fingers “walking” through the air 🚪 Outside: point at the door 🚗 Car ride: turn an imaginary steering wheel 😴 Bedtime: palms together against your cheek 👐 All done: open hands, palms down, sweep apart 🤟 I love you: the sign language “I love you” hand HOW TO TEACH THEM: Say the word, show the signal, reward with a treat. A few minutes a day. Be patient and make sure everyone at home uses the same signals. Consistency is key. OTHER TIPS: 🦶 Stomp lightly to get their attention. Even as hearing fades, dogs can still feel vibrations through the floor. A gentle stomp or a tap on the floor near them lets them know you’re there without having to shout. 💡 Flick the porch light to call them inside at night. Calling their name into a dark yard stops working when they can’t hear you. Flicking the lights is a signal they can see from across the yard. 👋 Get into the routine of approaching them from the front so you don’t startle them. Seniors with impaired hearing can get spooked if you approach them from behind. Walk into their line of sight first. 🧸 Observe how they react to squeaky toys. High-pitched sounds are often the first to go. If they used to come running at the squeak and now don’t react, it can be an early sign their hearing is changing, long before they miss your voice. If you do believe your dog's hearing is going, it may be time for a vet visit. 👉 Share this with a dog parent who can benefit #seniordog #seniordogsofinstagram #dogtips #deafdog #DogTraining
