Why was Christa Pike the only person in her case sentenced to death? The Christa Pike case raises difficult questions about race, gender, interracial relationships, and the history of the death penalty in Tennessee. Pike was a young white woman in a relationship with a Black teenager, and while several young people were connected to the case, she ultimately became the person facing Tennessee’s harshest punishment. This video explores whether her case can also be viewed through America’s long history of policing interracial relationships—especially relationships between white women and Black men. For generations, laws and social customs attempted to enforce racial boundaries, and researchers have examined how women who crossed those boundaries were sometimes treated as outsiders to traditional ideas of white womanhood. That does not erase the seriousness of what happened to Colleen Slemmer or argue that Pike should not have faced consequences. Instead, it asks a larger historical question: Did race, gender, and ideas about who a “respectable” white woman was supposed to be influence how Christa Pike was viewed and punished? From Tennessee’s history of anti-miscegenation laws to the concept of “gendered racial boundary maintenance,” the Christa Pike case offers a complicated look at race, white womanhood, criminal justice, and the American death penalty. #History #tennessee #christapike #christapikestory #americanhistory
