Just in time for Halloween 🦇🧡 🎥 from @ amnuay47 (IG) Meet the painted bat (Kerivoula picta), also known as the painted woolly bat, one of the most unusually colored mammals in the world. Found throughout parts of South and Southeast Asia, these tiny creatures sport vibrant orange fur, jet-black wings, and orange markings that trace the bones of their wings. And despite their eye-catching appearance, scientists believe these colors may actually serve as camouflage, helping them blend into dried banana leaves and surrounding vegetation. Although, the bright green leaves in this video aren't quite helping. Weighing just 0.18 ounces (5 grams), roughly the weight of a nickel, painted bats are surprisingly skilled nighttime hunters, using echolocation to locate insects and spiders among dense vegetation. Unlike bats that gather in enormous colonies, painted bats typically roost alone or in pairs. Researchers have even documented small family groups consisting of two adults and their youngster. Interestingly, they're also known to change their daytime resting spots frequently, sometimes every one to four days. Unfortunately, their beautiful coloring has made them targets of the ornamental wildlife trade, where they're captured and sold as decorations and souvenirs. Combined with habitat loss and other threats, these pressures have contributed to their Near Threatened conservation status. 🌲 Love nature?
