21 Skeletons found in a cave on this propert. Historic Preston-Crockett House (also known as the John Preston House or Herondon), located in Smyth County, Virginia. Its historical timeline covers over 180 years: 💀 A Dark Origin (Pre-1842) Before the brick mansion was erected, an old 18th-century log tavern stood on this property along the historic Wilderness Road. Local legend holds that the original innkeeper routinely robbed and murdered wealthy travelers. These rumors were seemingly substantiated in 1892 when 21 skeletons were discovered in a nearby cave on the property. 🏨 The Grand Tavern (1842) Hoping to erase the property's sinister reputation, John Montgomery Preston built the massive, 22-room Federal and Greek Revival-style brick structure in 1842 to serve as a reputable grand tavern and stagecoach inn. ⚔️ The Civil War & Family Home (1864) In 1864, the building transitioned from a commercial inn to a private family residence for Preston’s son, John Montgomery Preston Jr.. Later that same year, Union General Stoneman’s Federal troops ransacked the property, commandeering it as their temporary military headquarters. Soldiers famously tied their horses in the dining room and smashed up the family's furniture to use as firewood. The home was also an invaluable repository of early American history, housing personal letters written by George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Patrick Henry, and James Monroe, which were later sold to the Library of Congress. ✍️ The Lucy Crockett Era (1947–2002) From 1947 until her passing in 2002, the home belonged to Lucy Herndon Crockett, a famed post-WWII novelist, artist, and world traveler. She named the estate Herondon and operated a gift shop out of it called the Wilderness Road Trading Post. She wrote several popular books here, including The Magnificent Bastards, which was adapted into a major Hollywood film (The Proud and Profane). Crockett was a colorful local figure who famously drove a military jeep and claimed the house was haunted by a headless Union soldier. 🛑 Current Status The property sat completely vacant after 2002 and fell into heavy disrepair. In 2022, it was placed on the

In 2022, it was placed on the "Most Endangered Historic Sites" list after the land was purchased by a developer with intentions to demolish it for a commercial truck stop. However, widespread local preservation efforts have kept the wrecking ball at bay, and the current owners have stated they intend to spare the house from initial construction phases while looking into preservation options. #History #historia #historical #HiddenHistory #historylovers
