Just a few months ago, we were talking about South Africans attacking and killing other Black Africans. Before that, it was Ghanaians forcing Nigerians out of Ghana. And goodness gracious, before that, Ghana and Nigeria had a whole history of tensions, with people being expelled from both countries. So I’m just confused about why we’re discussing this like it’s some uniquely American problem. I think it’s a worldwide problem, and the more we talk about it, the more apparent that becomes. It’s especially visible in the West, where immigration is such a prominent part of the political and social conversation, but xenophobia certainly isn’t exclusive to the West.

This has nothing to do with his murder. People outside NYC are exploiting this tragedy to push their own agendas while those of us living here are confronting a serious crisis of youth gun violence. We regularly see footage out of the Bronx of teenagers chasing down other teenagers with guns in broad daylight. I initially scrolled past this story because these incidents have become so disturbingly common. If it hadn’t been him, it could have been someone else’s child. Nobody even knows who committed this crime, yet people are dragging online diaspora wars and FBA rhetoric into it. This is a predominantly Black immigrant and Latino neighborhood. The focus should be on why children are killing children, not using a child’s murder to fuel ethnic divisions online.
