@hannahanniex: It is absolutely your prerogative whether or not you tell your employer about your ADHD. I’m sharing the experience I have had and the fear that stopped me from stating my ADHD diagnosis alongside the misinformation I received so that you can make a judgement based call on what’s right for you. Whilst knowing all of the information. I wish I knew about the protections I had sooner, but I am glad I documented everything. This only applies to people in the UK, I’m not sure if ADHD is a protected characteristic where you may be based. #adhdwomen #burnoutrecovery #corporatelife

you CAN disclose, just don't do so until after you've passed probation. Business CAN and WILL still discriminate, and it's really hard to prove because they will try to get you on any little thing, you basically have no protection during your probation period.

they will still get rid of you if they want. good luck proving it was discrimination. get put on a pip, then a few weeks later let go. you just "didn't fit in to the team"

Sadly the problem is that occupational health will make all these amazing recommendations and your workplace can then go and decide which of them they deem reasonable - which leads to so many people not actually getting the adjustments they need! It’s such a backward system 🫠

I don't think there are any reasonable adjustments for ADHD because it would require someone else to do my job, e.g. checking my emails and keeping track of my deadlines. I don't see any benefit in disclosing it.

I set up a website for ADHD and autism info in Scotland as a side project to make the system easier to navigate for people, like I wish I had. Told my employer (education) about it recently as I run it anonymously and recently media are interested in using the data I have from health boards, govt etc and possibly interview me and now I’m waiting for the council to tell me if I’m even allowed to proceed in doing it, media or whole project as they’re determining if it’s a “conflict of interest” or if I should be allowed to do “other work” which I didn’t declare. I don’t speak about individual councils etc at all and i don’t know what to do if they tell me I can’t proceed with it….

And yet it is so hard to challenge the treatment via an occupational tribunal. I was told the manager disagreed when I raised an issue. HR at a big corporate told me it was going to be very hard for me to challenge and an employment tribunal will reflect badly upon me. I was then made redundant, raised the same issue and then was told that it was just me trying to challenge the redundancy. I gave up but I still feel admitting it is something that puts you back. On job applications I’ve applied twice to the same job different emails, different answers to do you have a disability and the same CV. Guess which profile got the interview.

I dunno - in my profession, disclosing adhd gets you shunned. Despite the fact that it's really important to understand ADHD in my profession, my experience is that very few actually do. I've been bullied relentlessly for my ADHD - right from my postgraduate training course. I wouldn't trust them to disclose

It’s so job and person specific 🫠 one manager made my life HELL when I disclosed it but another was on HRs neck when they were taking ages to apply my reasonable adjustments

Adjustments and reasonable behaviour rarely follows from a disclosure, but it’s important regardless

My suggestion to people who do it is do some self reflection. Find out what support you need, what your reasonable adjustments may be. Be 100% honest

Oh I remember I had doubts of disclosing depression episode to my employer. But I decided to do so and actually it really helped me. But well, it all depends on specific situation and relationships!
