@therajrpatel: AMLODIPINE - WHY DOES IT CAUSE SWOLLEN ANKLES? Amlodipine ankle swelling: why water tablets may not help Swollen ankles can make you wonder whether you need something to remove the fluid. Before adding another tablet, the cause needs checking. With leg swelling plus new breathlessness or chest pain, call 999. For unexplained one-leg swelling, or a red, hot or painful area, seek an urgent GP appointment or NHS 111. Do water tablets help amlodipine ankle swelling? Usually they have little effect on this particular side effect. Diuretics, often called water tablets, remove extra salt and water through your kidneys. Amlodipine-related swelling involves fluid pooling around small blood vessels, rather than the same problem as general fluid overload. That matters because adding a diuretic may leave the original problem unresolved. It doesn't mean a water tablet already prescribed for another condition is wrong. Ask what each medicine is treating, and don't stop any prescribed medicine yourself. Can amlodipine swelling start after months? Yes. It often develops over weeks or months after starting treatment or increasing the dose, but it can appear later too. A medicine you've taken for a while still belongs in the review. Equally, timing alone cannot prove that amlodipine is the cause. Does ankle swelling mean kidney damage? Not automatically. This side effect does not, by itself, show that your kidneys have been damaged. But kidney, heart and liver problems can also cause swelling. Your history, symptoms and examination help your clinician decide whether tests are needed. A photograph cannot settle that question on its own. Can I stop amlodipine if my ankles swell? Don't stop or change the dose yourself. The aim is to deal with the swelling while keeping your blood pressure or angina properly treated. A lower dose or a different medicine may be suitable, but that depends on why you take it, your readings and your other health conditions. Swelling is more likely with higher doses, but it isn't a simple calculation: halving a dose does not guarantee half the swelling. Bring the actual dose and any recent changes to your review. A good blood pressure reading does not tell you what caused the swelling. Will compression socks help? They may help some people with mild swelling, but ask whether they are suitable and properly fitted. Don't buy tight socks to hide a new problem or use them instead of getting unexplained one-leg swelling assessed. Raising your legs when resting may help mild symptoms while you arrange advice. What should I ask at my medicine review? Try: "Could this be related to amlodipine, and what else needs ruling out?" Then ask what each treatment option would mean for your blood pressure, how the plan will be checked and when to report persistent swelling. Bring every medicine you take, including anything bought without a prescription. Say if your shoes no longer fit, your skin feels tight or the discomfort is affecting your walking. Those everyday effects matter when choosing a plan; you don't have to wait until you cannot manage. For mild symptoms without urgent features, comfortable shoes and avoiding long spells standing or sitting may help. These measures can ease discomfort, but they do not replace a review if the swelling persists or worsens. Don't try to treat it by changing your prescribed medicines. The video explains which swelling patterns need checking. The description helps you prepare for the conversation after that. Don't wait for a reply here if your symptoms need urgent help. If someone helps with your tablets, ask them to bring the current list with you. Which question would you most want answered at your review?
