"The most potent weapon in the hands of the oppressor is the mind of the oppressed." His life and death remain an important part of South African history." width="135" height="240">
Steve Bantu Biko (1946–1977) was a South African anti-apartheid activist and one of the most influential leaders in the struggle against racial oppression. Early Life Steve Biko was born on 18 December 1946 in King William's Town (now known as Qonce), South Africa. He grew up during apartheid, the system of racial segregation enforced by the South African government. Black Consciousness Movement Biko believed that Black South Africans needed to overcome the psychological effects of oppression and develop pride in their identity and culture. He became a leading figure in the Black Consciousness Movement, which encouraged Black people to reject feelings of inferiority and organize for their own liberation. In 1968, he helped found the South African Students' Organisation, which became a major voice for Black students. Government Restrictions Because of his activism, the apartheid government saw Biko as a threat. In 1973, he was "banned," meaning he was severely restricted in where he could go, whom he could meet, and what he could say publicly. Arrest and Death In August 1977, Biko was arrested by South African security police. During interrogation, he was brutally beaten and suffered severe head injuries. Instead of receiving proper medical treatment, he was transported hundreds of kilometers while critically injured. He died on 12 September 1977 at the age of 30 in Pretoria while in police custody. The government initially claimed he died from a hunger strike, but evidence later showed that his death resulted from injuries sustained during police interrogation. Legacy Biko's death caused international outrage and increased global opposition to apartheid. He became a symbol of resistance and courage in South Africa and around the world. Today, Steve Biko is remembered as one of the key figures who inspired the fight that eventually led to the end of apartheid and the establishment of democratic rule in South Africa in 1994. One of his most famous quotes is: > "The most potent weapon in the hands of the oppressor is the mind of the oppressed." His life and death remain an important part of South African history.
