Almost 7 years. I remained hopeful that every time something changed, it was only temporary, and that we could get back to who we were. We never did, but we were so...terrified of the widening space between us and not knowing how to begin mending it. And we were tired, too tired to realize the hurt our silences were causing each other, but neither of us wanted to leave the other for different reasons...but I couldn't keep the blindfold on anymore, I had lost so many of my branches and leaves, I knew that staying would mean I would continue to condemn my soul to a slow and painful snuffing out...there was no grandeur in my departure...it hurts, immensely, to have lost a long-time love, but what hurts more is realizing that the person I left was not the person I started with, and his soul was dying too...and I was hopeful to a degree that we could repair ourselves on our own and continue in friendship...but I think its not in the cards. Its strange to mourn the loss of something you were losing for a while when it finally ends, and stranger still to mourn after a future that was never there to begin with. I will hold all of the parts of him that have been etched in my hands, my heart, and my soul, not as I had wished them to be, but as they are. And I will love these markings and memories, and know that I will never reunite them with their creator.
