A lot of senior dog parents tell me that is the first moment that made them pause. 1. His naps got deeper, and that is mostly normal When he was young the sound of a treat bag across the house woke him instantly. Old dogs sleep more deeply and often for longer. The first few times it happens it can frighten you, and usually nothing is wrong. 2. Waking him suddenly is harder on him now If he cannot hear well, a hand out of nowhere makes him startle. Come into his line of sight first, or put your hand somewhere he can feel your weight, and give him a second to find your face. 3. His sleep is worth protecting Old dogs need a lot of it. Wake him when you have a reason, for a walk or the toilet or the vet, and leave him be when you do not. There are exceptions to all of this. Some dogs with dementia need to be kept more awake during the day, and your vet will tell you if that is yours. If his sleep changed suddenly, or he is restless at night rather than sleeping deeply, that one is worth mentioning at his next appointment.
