Literally! 400 years is the max anyone is going to be able to do this, and that’s ONLY if they didn’t emigrate to another portion of the world between 1800-1950

Some Celtic and Irish cultures adopted early hereditary forms earlier—such as O'Clery (recorded around 916) or O'Brien (1014) in Ireland.

Parishes have records, so if you were in Europe and your country stayed largely Catholic, it's absolutely possible.

the 13th century was 800 years ago, they dont need 2000 years of records, plus England adopted surnames in 1066, by the year 1200 ¾ of all wealthy and middle class families had surnames, and significantly more than that by the end of the 13th century - its definitely entirely possible 👍

When I first started tracking on Ancestry, I happily just hit “Yes” on nearly any hint, including other people’s trees. Now that I am checking actual records more closely, I’m deleting any “ancestor” that doesn’t have an actual record. “Someone said” is not proof

European villages do have extremely long tracking of their people, going back to the Norman conquest isn't out of the question

On top of all that,%80 of the population back then was illiterate.Only the church and nobility could read and write.England for example the medieval nobility didn't even speak english, they spoke French and Latin.😅And then there's surfdom your surname usually came from the landlord who owned you and others.

I can accurately trace my lineage to the tenth century because I come from a famous scholarly rabbinical family with well documented lineage through marriage documents.

If you could then you would also be assuming that there was no cheating in that 800+ plus years. No women that were raped and forced to give their child a surname that wasn’t biologically their’s .

See the problem with this is that most europeans do have royal/Noble blood In them..... Like sure it will take 50+ lines To trace to find that one Noble line but it IS possible.

I agree. As someone who CAN accurately trace my lineage back to the 1400s, I know for a fact it’s either impossible or way too inaccurate to be able to trace it back further than that, and even 1400s is sketchy.

A lot of the population records came from churches. Where people famously lit lots of candles. Sometimes I feel like we're lucky to have what records we do have tbh 😭

I can trace a single branch back to the 1200s, but only because i reached nobility in the 1600s. All the other branches stop in the 1500s, which is when my country started keeping records

my grandfathers family kept EXTREMELYYYYYYYY meticulous records and even they can only go back to the mid-late 1400s, thats from his fathers side. records for his mothers side only go back to his grandparents, unfortunately all the other records were lost in a church fire in 1939 before his mother and father got married in germany *cough*
