💔 Bear spent 8 years being someone’s dog. Then he was left with a friend and his owner never came back. The friend tried to keep Bear, but severe allergies requiring medical treatment eventually made it impossible. So after 8 years of knowing what home felt like, Bear ended up in a shelter. 😢 His former caretaker described a dog who sounds like he was made to be someone’s family. Bear is reportedly house trained, crate trained, knows several commands, and has lived happily around children from newborns to teenagers. He’s also reportedly friendly with cats and enjoys visiting other dogs at family members’ homes. But the Bear we’re seeing in the shelter is a frightened, confused old boy. He trembles, pants heavily, whines, and constantly watches his surroundings. During one evaluation, he climbed onto a bench just to peer through a window, desperate to see what was happening outside. He’ll lean his entire body against a handler for affection, sometimes pressing his rear against them while they try to comfort him. And when it’s time to return to his kennel? Bear digs his nails into the ground and pulls so desperately in the opposite direction that he begins wheezing. 💔 His notes describe a dog who is terrified of going back into that kennel. Unfortunately, his resistance to returning to the kennel has become difficult for staff to manage, landing him on the euthanasia list. Bear has also tested positive for coccidia and roundworms, which will need medical follow-up. This is a dog who spent 8 years sleeping in a home, knowing his people, and being part of a family. Now he’s so overwhelmed that he can barely bring himself to walk back into his kennel. Bear doesn’t need someone to teach him how to be a family dog. According to his history, he already knows.
