Naa Aku Shika :
There is something deeply heartbreaking about the contrast between the hospitality many Africans extend to members of the diaspora who visit our continent and the hostility some Africans encounter when they travel to or settle in the West. It is particularly painful to hear of a child losing their life because of hatred, prejudice or hostility. No child should ever become a victim of someone’s ignorance or resentment. Human life should never be reduced to race, nationality or stereotypes. To those African Americans who have been conditioned to believe that Africans are their enemies, I ask: who benefits from this division? Why should people whose histories are so deeply intertwined continue to see one another as adversaries? There is also something many people fail to understand, for an average African, relocating to America or another Western country is rarely an easy journey. It often takes years of preparation, enormous financial sacrifice, determination, courage and, sometimes, personal hardship. Behind the African immigrant you see today is often a story of sacrifices, sleepless nights, family contributions, difficult decisions and dreams pursued against incredible odds. And please, do not mistake Africa’s economic challenges for a lack of wealth or potential. Africa is a continent rich in natural resources, culture, talent and human capital. Yet centuries of colonial exploitation, the enduring consequences of neocolonialism, unequal global economic arrangements and continued resource extraction have contributed to conditions that make it difficult for many Africans to realise their full potential. So, before you look at an African immigrant with contempt, remember that you are looking at a human being with a story, aspirations and sacrifices of their own.
Our history should be a bridge, not a weapon.
To those who perpetuate hatred against Africans, shame on you. And to those who have been taught to hate Africans simply because of where they come from, I hope you find the courage to question that narrative.
We have inherited enough division from history. #Justice for Javits Frimpong
