AfroGoth.com Welfare programs in the United States, as we know them today, were largely developed during the Great Depression with President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal in the 1930s. These programs were intended to provide financial support to vulnerable groups—such as the elderly, unemployed, disabled, and single mothers—by offering assistance with income, food, housing, and healthcare. Although Black Americans were technically eligible for these programs, many faced systemic exclusion due to discriminatory practices. The Social Security Act of 1935, for example, excluded agricultural and domestic workers—sectors that employed a large percentage of Black Americans—leaving them without access to key benefits. Welfare programs like Aid to Dependent Children (ADC), which provided support to low-income single mothers, were administered locally, allowing Southern states to discriminate against Black applicants. Many Black families were either denied aid or received less than white families, and policies like “suitable home” rules disproportionately affected Black mothers. Over time, civil rights legislation, such as the Civil Rights Act of 1964, helped reduce racial discrimination in welfare. However, Black Americans continue to face systemic inequalities that affect their access to and experience within these programs. _____________________________________________ 🔮 Follow for more @afro_goth_aesthetic 🖤DM for features, collabs or submissions 🦇 AfroGoth Admin & Representatives: @lotus_dreamin @spaceboikenny @efraintheunknown @devillainofglam @kj.b.pannell @officialeastsid3_kitty @heshhippie.tv 👽 Join the Greys 🎶 @spaceboikenny _____________________________________________ #afrogoth #afrogothaesthetic #gothaesthetic #gothlasvegas #punklasvegas #altlasvegas #lasvegasfestival #BlackHistory #BlackExcellence #BlackHistoryMonth #BlackVoices #BlackCulture #BlackPower #BlackLivesMatter #BlackAndProud #MelaninMagic #BlackLeaders #AfricanAmericanHistory #BlackHeritage
