You know, being on the Nixon Tapes is like the opposite of being in the Epstein Files — it’s a good sign you’re doing something right. And Dick Cavett was mentioned on those tapes 26 times, with Nixon famously asking, “is there any way we could screw him?” This is probably because, with the exception of the nightly news shows, no one devoted more time to the Watergate scandal. When Dick was reporting from the Senate floor, Johnny Carson was interviewing Charo. "I was an addict," Cavett told TVGuide in 2014. "You couldn't wait to get your Watergate fix for the day, especially when it became clear that Nixon was lying." Gore Vidal, in an amazing appearance on the show, agreed: “I have to wake up every morning, and I start to shake unless I get my Watergate fix.” “The country was threatened, a presidency was corrupted,” Cavett told Parade. “The system seemed to be coming apart, and every day, it gets thicker and hairier and more intriguing. This was an ongoing soap opera, like none there’s ever been before.” The whole thing “had the feel of a John Le Carré novel, so it appealed to me,” he says in the “Dick Cavett’s Watergate.” "I had no choice" but to spend time on it, he concluded, because "it was just the most fascinating thing in the world." But his being on the leading edge was actually something of an accident. “I don’t think any of us, any of us consciously said, ‘This is our theme from now on,’” he said to Parade. “Truth be told, [Kennedy] was already booked for that date. Nobody knew the break-in was going to happen. But it was fortunate, because as you saw on there, he’s a little coy about the whole thing when I say, ‘Do you think John Mitchell knew?’” And from there, they were off and running. From 1972 to 1974, Cavett interviewed nearly every major figure connected to the scandal — including Nixon aides John Ehrlichman, Alexander Haig, G. Gordon Liddy and Jeb Magruder, Henry Kissinger, Washington Post reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, Barry Goldwater, Attorney General Richard Kleindienst, White House counsel John Dean, Senate Watergate Committee members Howard Baker, Daniel Inouye, Herman Talmadge, Lowell Weicker, and Vice President Gerald Ford. You might wonder why Nixon would let so many of his people even go on the show? “The Cavett show was where you went if you wanted great conversation,” said “Dick Cavett’s Watergate” director John Scheinfeld. It “was where you went when you wanted to reach a younger, hipper audience. “The Nixon White House knew this and both feared Dick’s influence on young viewers…and craved access to them.” As Newsweek reported at the time, even though he “still trails well behind both Carson and Griffin in the ratings, it is Cavett’s shows that are now generating the morning after talk on campuses and commuter trains.” So, the only way to reach the people he wanted to reach was by sending people into enemy territory. And make no mistake. He saw them as enemies. That’s all he could see all around him. As Dick said to Parade, “on the tapes of the very first day, there’s no celebrations of the victory, or that’s what we can do for the country, or let’s go and start getting stuff done. It was ‘let’s get this one, and we can screw him, and he never supported us, what can we do to him,’ the usual Nixon pathology that marred what could have been a brilliant career.” Nixon’s whole life was ruled by feelings of inferiority and resentment. He got into Harvard, but didn’t go because he couldn’t afford it, and resented privileged Ivy Leaguers like JFK. And then he was vice president to Eisenhower, who treated him with open disdain and left him twisting in maybe his only undeserved scandal. Then, he loses the presidency to the JFK, knowing that it’s largely because he’s not as attractive, as people who only heard them debate actually preferred Nixon. So, the next time he gets a shot at it, he cheats. (continues in comments…) #thecavettshow #nixon #watergate #talkshow #cavett
